East
Whatcom County Community Information
The Eastern portion of Whatcom County is dotted
with a few small towns along the westerly edges of the foothills
leading to the Cascade Mountains and Mt. Baker. Everson, Nooksack and
Sumas are the major population centers with Acme, Maple Falls,
VanZandt, Kendall & Glacier primarily marked by a local grocery and gas facility. The economy is
based on farming, forest products and recreation, and the recreation
is incredible.
Hiking and camping opportunities are endless, with much of the eastern county
designated as national forest. Wildlife is prolific – a high
point of our drive to the Mt. Baker ski area is watching elk
feed just off the highway. Vistas are gorgeous, with a different
view of the Nooksack River, Mt. Shuksan, Mt Baker or the Sisters
around every bend of the road.
And that brings us to Mt. Baker, rated by
some people as the best ski and snow boarding mountain in North
America. We have skied it for over 30 years, and while there
are more people than there used to be, on a sunny afternoon of
spring skiing the only thing limiting the number of runs you
can make is your fitness level. And if you are a boarder, Mt.
Baker was an incubator of the sport and boasts the only natural
half-pipe there is
