The Birchwood Neighborhood is an interesting study in contrasts. The neighborhood has historically been an area consisting of single family homes built on extremely large lots. It is characterized by older, well-kept homes on lots that often exceed 400 feet in length. Mature landscaping and narrow streets lend a rural atmosphere to the neighborhood.
In recent years the neighborhood has seen some growth, noticeably in the additons of apartment complexes located primarily along Northwest Avenue and other large complexes on W. Maplewood. In addition there is a large area of commercial property located at the intersection of Northwest and Birchwood Avenue. This area includes an Albertson’s Grocery Store, a couple of gas stations and other retail businesses.
